Write short stories

A lot of the time you find really influential stories originally come from novellas, and I think that’s because it takes supreme skill to write one. It’s easy to bulk up a novella into a novel, adding extraneous characters and stretching out scenes, but the ability to say ‘that’s everything this story needs, it’s finished’ comes with either great confidence and insight or complete foolishness. I’m a big fan of authorial minimalism, though it’s an easy doctrine to champion and a difficult one to live up to.

Hi Emily, I think story structure is down to the individual really – it depends what suits a story best. I tend to prefer 1st person in the present tense as it delivers a fast, engaging pace for the reader. In a short story, due to the low word count, you have to make good use of every word. While backstory can be very useful, it can be slow if overused – it can disengage the reader. Personally I prefer the here and now, using lots of dialogue to develop character and reveal the plot. Having said that, I have also written a number of short stories in the third person and in past tense. It really does depend on the characters, situation and plot. I usually advise writers to experiment and see what works best for them.

Hi! this is my first comment on this site! First of all I want to say I m a big fan of it! I love the articles and the tips! Maybe my comment is offtopic but I really need a suggestion…I m Italian with a discrete level of English and I would like start writing short stories in English…is that crazy? I mean, …I already know I will need time to reach a level of English that allow me to write at least a decent story( I don’t live in a country where I’m surrounded by English people, even if I use English sometimes for job )…and I know I will hardly get the confidence I can have writing in my native language but I really would like to do that in order to better take advance of this community!
